“If you want success, you’ll have to get through the struggle, the pain, and the sacrifice.” – D/C Timothy James G. Bacho, BSMT Polaris graduate, former Deck Cadet of CMA Ships Philippines

Maritime professionals, faculty members, cadets, and cadettes convened at Paghi-UsA Hall today, June 18, as the College of Maritime Studies celebrated Maritime Day 2026 with the theme, “Navigating Greatness: UA’s Next Step Towards Maritime Excellence.”

The CMS Day, organized under the leadership of CMS Dean Capt. Luis V. Garfin III, is an annual celebration that recognizes the vital role of the maritime industry and inspires future seafarers to pursue excellence, professionalism, and leadership in their chosen careers.

University President Dr. Godelyn G. Hisole, in her message, described navigation as more than simply finding direction at sea, noting that it requires “the courage to move forward despite uncertainty, the wisdom to make sound decisions, and the determination to stay on course even when faced with challenges”—qualities that she said mirror the University of Antique’s own journey towards growth and excellence.

Guest speaker Dr. Pablo S. Crespo Jr., Vice President for Administration and Finance, reminded students that maritime excellence is rooted in character and extends beyond technical competence, as he emphasized that responsibility and integrity must be developed long before stepping aboard a vessel noting that “the sea merely reveals what has been there on land.”

D/C Bacho, also added inspiration to the celebration through sharing lessons from his 12 months of onboard training, emphasizing the value of hardship and sacrifices in developing strength and resilience needed to succeed in the maritime industry.

The CMS Day will continue until tomorrow, June 19 featuring various activities and competitions including the Search for Star and Model Cadet. | IU-MAC Interns
