Hear the Dulungan call! August marks the celebration of the Dulungan Month pursuant to Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-208.
Also known as the Rufous-headed Hornbill (π βπππππ‘πππβπππ’π π€ππππππ), Visayan wrinkled hornbill or writhe-billed hornbill, the Dulungan was declared as the Province of Antique’s provincial bird by the virtue of Resolution No. 262-2000. This species is also called the “farmer of the forest” because it acts as a key seed disperser. Its unique gular pouch allows it to store seeds and insects which are then dispersed as it feeds its family, promoting forest regeneration and ecological balance.
The Dulungan is a critically endangered species endemic to the forests of Panay and Negros, with a significant population in northern Antique. We join the local government and agencies in raising awareness and promoting care for this species, supporting preservation and conservation efforts to foster a Dulungan-friendly community as we continue to advocate for the protection of our environment.
